A Class So Good the Door Monitor Bought Our Book – RootsTech

Networking and Ambassador status aside, Andy and I had a job today. RootsTech hired us to teach two labs on Friday afternoon, and it was time to put up or shut up as a speaker. And, a loyal blog follower was in the audience!

There are so many classes at conferences that fill your head with things to do when you leave. But Andy and I wanted to have class participants actually accomplish a task. Write one story about one event in one ancestor’s life in one hour. Could it be done?

Before the class started, people were lining up to get in 15 minutes before the doors opened. There is nothing like a line of people waiting to come in to set the adrenaline pumping in a speaker. Andy and I were ready!

My blog reader Lilian Magill was excited to take my class. Since she was traveling from Australia, I did not want to disappoint. When she not only still wanted to talk to me after the class and bought the book that the class is based upon, I felt I could rest easily.

(By the way, she has this photo of my book in her blog post, “Goodies from RootsTech!” Aw Lilian)

Next, I discovered that my friend in Texas had told her mom (who was already a ticket-holding RootsTech attendee) that she HAD to come to my class. My friend hasn’t ever seen me teach, but she’s heard how I taught her daughter (who I adore by the way).

Whew! I didn’t let Dorothy down. Thanks, Misty for promoting me. Love you!!!

So, Misty told her mom to take my class. Misty’s mom told her friend that they both needed to come to my class. I’m so glad I didn’t let Misty down! And, I’m so glad Misty’s mom took a photo with me so we could say Howdy from Utah!

Book Signing for Recipe for Writing Family History

After we had sold 45 books across the two labs that totaled 70 people, Andy and I celebrated success. I do hope others will have us teach our “Start Writing Your Family History Today” class in person or through a webinar.

By the way, our door monitor bought the book! Think about this. This man volunteered to serve as a room monitor.

He’d attended numerous workshops in two days (Thursday and Friday) and not only did he say our class was the best lab he attended, he wanted the book to take home the essentials of the course!

Social etiquette says it’s not polite to brag. I apologize if I come across that way. I just wanted to share with you what it feels like to be an author and speaker. We fear what we have to offer will not live up to expectations. When we have this feedback, we can let out a sigh of relief.
