5 Reasons Why You Should Attend the Texas State Genealogy Conference

With the increase of online learning opportunities, why should you spend your time traveling to a genealogy conference, especially Texas? Learn five reasons why you should plan to attend the Texas State Genealogical Society Family History Conference on October 11-13, at the Omni Houston Hotel Westside in Katy, Texas.

1. Expand Your Genealogy Knowledge

A genealogy conference builds upon the knowledge you’ve acquired thus far. You can choose from 56 educational lectures and 4 optional hands-on workshops. Expand your knowledge of historical records, DNA, tracing ethnic groups, and writing a family history.

You’ll learn from some of the top genealogy educators. Diane L Richards helped us learn about new paths to try in our genealogy research in 2018

2. Meet Other Genealogists

Genealogy can be a solo hobby filled. Many family members and friends just “don’t get it.”

At the Texas State Genealogy Society Conference, you’ll hang out with 400 family history enthusiasts and feel like you belong! No one will roll their eyes when you start discussing your recent archive discovery for a distant relative or your brick wall.

3. Explore the Genealogy and History Societies

The Texas State Genealogy Society Conference has a terrific yet small expo all. You’ll find lineage and genealogy societies with booths. Visit with society members, buy books specific to the area you are researching, and build the foundation of new friendships. Other vendors with helpful products and services for genealogists have tables where you can learn about what they offer.

4. Interact Live with Educators

Genealogy educators and experts are accessible through social media and their websites. A live conference allows you the opportunity to ask questions from the best in the field so you can leave with new understanding and ideas. You may even chat with a speaker in between sessions or after the last class as well! Catching folks on their off time is easily done at a conference.

Devon Noel Lee and Lisa Louise Cooke at a genealogy conference

I’ve enjoyed meeting amazing genealogy educators, such as Lisa Louise Cooke, at the Texas State Genealogy Conference! She’s not attending 2020 but you never know who you’ll meet.

A few years ago, I enjoyed meeting Lisa Louise Cooke. She had so much more time to chat at that event than any other event I’ve attended. Although she’s not scheduled to attend the Katy, Texas event, there are many educators that you’ll want to corner. They’ll likely have more time to discuss your research questions and areas of interest.

5. SOUTHERN Research Tracks

Texas is part of the south so the Texas State Genealogy Society Conference has tracks filled with relevant topics. You can learn about Texas, Oklahoma, the Five Tribes, Mexico, and African American resources. For those with ancestry outside the south, you still have plenty of methodology classes to satisfy your thirst for knowledge.
